McCormick Fellows Forum 2009: Comfort Cams + Broke-A** Brides?!

Tuesday, November 03, 2009

A record-breaking number of McCormick Fellows - 55 of the initiative’s 95 minority media execs from across the country - gathered in Chicago last week for the Fellowship’s annual Fall Forum. In its 11th year, the program allows minority news execs to attend some of the industry’s leading management training and also provides a platform for sharing their views on critical issues facing the news industry. Highlights from this year’s program included:

  • A talk on use of social media led by Fellow Javier Morgado of NBC News
  • A discussion on the state of diversity initiatives in the news industry led by Fellow Larry Olmstead of Leading Edge Associates
  • A brainstorming session where Fellows explored new online tools and used them to develop concepts for niche news and information sites, led by Sybril Bennett of Belmont University

This last session led to some winning - and hilarious - concepts:
  • A Web site for family members to monitor elderly relatives by viewing Comfort Cam.
  • A site for newbies in a community to connect with a church that matches their faith.
  • And yes, a site for wedding planners on a budget… called Broke-Ass Brides!

In our continuing series on journalists "reinventing" themselves, we caught up with McCormick Fellow Alli Joseph to ask her about her new company Seventh Generation Stories… (click here)

Walking the Walk

Wednesday, June 11, 2008

The McCormick Fellows aren't just paying lip service to the multimedia landscape, they're putting themselves behind the lens.

The group of nearly 90 high-powered minority media executives recently launched their first foray into online video. You can catch their responses to the question: "Where are we today when it comes to diversity in the newsroom?" at http://www.mtfellows.org/video.asp

Expect more on this topic from the group at UNITY this year, where it premiers its own documentary about the media's diversity progress since the 20th anniversary of the Kerner Commission. The commission, which released a final report in 1968, was created upon the order of President Johnson to investigate the causes of 1967 race riots. It claimed the media didn't present an accurate portrayal of the riots and conditions leading up to them.

McCormick Tribune Fellows Highlighted in NAA report

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

MT Fellows Edwina Blackwell Clark and Sharon Prill figure big in a recent Newspaper Association of America report on trends in audience development. The NAA report “Growing Audience: Building Audience, Building Brands,” explores trends and staffing of 'audience development' initiatives, which it says have replaced 'interactive' as the current buzzword of the newspaper industry.

Blackwell Clark began her career as a reporter and now oversees 350 people as senior vice president of audience at Cox Publishing in Dayton. She says that focus has gone from studying current readers to studying those who aren't reading newspapers in order to learn more about them. Since taking on her current position in the summer of 2006, she is - remarkably - well on her way to reaching her goal of launching a dozen new products.

Prill, senior vice president of interactive media and audience development at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, is part of the executive team that evaluates new initiatives across the organization. She recently discovered that 90 percent of JSOnline.com’s web traffic and click-throughs were actually driven through the user-generated parts of the site. As a result, the sites now place even more emphaiss on user-generated content.

The full report is posted online at http://www.naa.org/docs/Audience/building%20audience%20final%2011%201%2007.pdf.
